The Barbeque Tour
History:
Since the beginning of time, man has known of the need for male-bonding activity. This
concept originally consisted of groups of men hunting and gathering food and provisions
that the tribe/clan needed to survive. Thankfully, the concept has evolved over time, and
today we have the "road trip". Hunting and gathering parties came with their own
built-in purpose, and similarly, the key to any really good road trip is a common
objective (as evidenced in the movie Fandango). As I was musing upon road trips and common
objectives, I stumbled upon a Texas Monthly article published in 1997 on the
"50 Best BBQ Joints in Texas"... ...and the idea of the Texas BBQ Tour was born!
Purpose:
To experience as many BBQ Joints as possible during an
extended weekend. Period. That is our top
priority. Participants must be willing to eat BBQ
up to about 7 times each day.
As you can imagine, in order to fulfill our primary mission, it is necessary to
find some diversions to get our minds off our full bellies! Popular
diversions have included visiting
local breweries, brewpubs, music venues, nightclubs, bars,
ballparks, & casinos. Additionally, lounging in the pool/spa
has been a favorite relaxation while reflecting on a bbq-filled day (and gearing
up for the next one).
Rules of Engagement:
 | Each participant will be armed with a notebook & writing instrument. |
 | We want to ensure a representative sampling of
the available menu items. To facilitate that
objective (when possible), we will:
 | Order meat by the pound to
share with other participants |
 | Order individual side items to share among the group |
|
 | |
Evaluation:
Each BBQ joint will be evaluated on the following criteria:
 | Food 70%
 | Meats are 60% |
 | Sides, sauces,
& condiments are 10%
(if rated) |
|
 | Atmosphere 30%
This rating includes, but is not limited to:
 | history, location, building, pits,
decor |
 | drink selections, the serving line,
tables, plates/napkins/utensils |
 | service and hospitality |
 | value for the money |
 | overall impression |
|
Each participant will score against the above criteria on a scale of 1-5, with a score of 5 being the best.
Scores are subject to change during the course of the trip, but become final
at the end of the tour
